NSC
It is reported in the media that the cabinet has approved a draft ordinance for the " National Security Council" (NSC). A brief and unconfirmed outline has also been mentioned in the report. The NSC is not a new idea . It exists in many countries and operates under the control and guidance of the elected government. We only hope our NSC would follow the same principle and shall not emerge as a " Super Government" to handle day to day internal crisis in political and economic fields. The NSC has two important aspects-- political aspect and national security aspect. I hope the latter would get more attention in the law in the making
In this regard, I hope our national security experts and strategists, in public and private sectors, would upgrade their professional knowledge and skills to contribute to our national security, and be very objective, non-partisan in their analysis of the national security issues. I do not know how much impact our foreign policy would make on our national security matters. It would be appropriate not to create any scapegoat and hypothetical enemy to keep the citizens under a permanent fear syndrome. Be realistic and do not bypass the democratic principles for " narrow political interest" of vested groups. We hope the nation would not be presented with a hybrid model of the "Special Powers Act" of 1974. This is very unpopular(?) but a political necessity of every ruling party!!
Finally, I would request the government to provide a clear vision about our national security and define the same in understandable terms for our citizens who are the front workers and defenders of our national security, not any particular organisation/institution. The government should make this NSC draft act public without delay and seek public opinion on it.
