Why not lift EPR?
Since the imposition of Emergency Powers Rule we have not heard too many voices against it till now when the political parties are raising their voices in favour of lifting it. A few newspapers have been vocal against EPR since its imposition, while some others have kept mum either fearing actions for their past misdeeds or fearing harassment.
Recently, some advisors are suggesting that national election is possible even under EPR with some relaxations. Some politicians are echoing their tones, while major political parties are demanding its lifting with a mild voice.
We really feel suffocated under EPR let alone think of election. Though political parties are not declaring if they would boycott election under EPR but a large section of the people will feel shaky to go the polling centres fearing harassment.
While we appreciate the many positive moves of the present government, we shall be happy to see the prompt lifting of emergency in full rather than relaxing it. After all, 150 million people should not suffer on the grounds of controlling a few 'notorious' politicians and businessmen.
