The coarsest type of rice sells at Tk 25--a matter of great concern. As I travel around the city I can see people standing in front of fair price outlets. It is not only the poor who are hit by soaring prices of the essentials. The middle- class and the lower middle-class also suffer immensely due to spiralling prices. In addition to rice the price of edible oil has also shot up. These days it sells at Tk 120-130 per litre. The price of this food item has increased rapidly over the years. This is symbolic of the phenomenon of rapid price hike. The prices of other essentials, barring the vegetables, are also increasing. The consumers have no option but to face the heat of the prices of different commodities. The government has taken some initiatives to tackle the problem. More attention should be given to the issue as many people are compelled to pass their days with an empty stomach. Something must be done to tackle this situation of '' invisible famine''.
