I have gone through the articles published in your daily on the above subject. I have also seen in the TV where different damaged parts of the bridge were clearly shown as well as compared the present alignment of the bridge. Further, different newspapers carried out detailed articles with pictures of displaced plates, missing bolts & nuts, which has in fact affected he alignment of the bridge. It is surprising when there is a weigh bridge to detect the permissible weight of trucks to pass over the road bridge which stand on the main pier, there is no installed mechanism to detect the weight of a broad gauge locomotive, carriage, goods wagon or the large loaded tank wagon or weight of the total rake which moves over the wing of the bridge. I feel that the huge moving weight and vibration on one side of the bridge caused damage to the structure and alignment of the bridge between the piers. It is not known why the Korean company responsible for maintenance of the bridge did not extend the contract after the first expiry. I have seen in today's DS that the World Bank will help to build a railway bridge besides Jamuna Bridge and a dialogue has taken place between Communications Adviser Major Gen (Retd) Golam Kader and World Bank's Managing Director Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala accompanied by Mr Praful C Patel, Asian Affairs Vice President. It seems that the donors of the Jumuna Bridge are aware of the extent of damage caused by the railway. I would like to make a small suggestion that to avoid further damage and collapse of the bridge, train movement over the wing of the bridge be immediately stopped and an expert team be invited from China & Britain to find out the extent of physical damage to the bridge and obtain their observations and recommendations.
