Medical waste
The Star Health Report published on April 26 on proper and safe disposal of medical waste, pioneered by Prism Bangladesh, is an excellent example of public service. It is a necessary step; better late than never. I was unaware that I had proposed it in your "letters" column some time back!
I congratulate Prism for undertaking this essential and important service which we lacked earlier. I hope they have informed all hospitals and clinics, both in the public and private sectors, to dispose of their medical waste. Dhaka City Corporation should strongly take up this issue with all hospitals and clinics; and if they find any example of neglect by any clinic or hospital, strong and exemplary steps should be taken against it under the present emergency regulations!
This hygienic step will protect the public environment of crowded urban areas from any sources of harmful infection. Other urban cities and locations in Bangladesh should also follow this safe and hygienic method of medical waste disposal. The government should provide all possible incentives and support this public health measure everywhere.
