Myanmar cyclone victims

Cyclone Nargis has torn apart the lives of the people of Myanmar, destroying buildings and knocking the power lines which have left 100,000 people homeless. It has been estimated that the number of lives lost, which has already crossed 100,000 will increase in the coming days. The military ruled Myanmar needs help from foreign countries. Myanmar is blocked from foreign aid by the western countries due to its military government. I think now we should forget about this matter and think about the people in distress. If we really are human beings, then we should help the people of Myanmar who are in need of food and shelter.

It is really very poignant to see the consequences of the devastating cyclone in Myanmar. The scattered dead bodies and distress of the people have shocked me. My heart goes out to the victims. It can be easily predicted that the loss caused by the cyclone will take a long time to be recovered. The country is already under sanctions. The devastations will have a long term impact on the impoverished economy. So, it is an uphill task for the Myanmar authorities. Md Jamil Akhter, Dept. of English, University of Dhaka
