'Protect rights of indigenous people'

Indigenous leaders yesterday called upon the government to take steps for protecting the traditional culture of the indigenous communities, ensuring their rights in land and giving constitutional recognition of their rights. At a discussion meeting on the premises of Gunigram school, they also urged the government to take steps for constitutional recognition of their rights and ensure their rights in land. Chitrorangon Sardar, Joyanti Baroar, Pachandranath Khalko, Lukus Saran, Motilala Tirki, Pachu Sarder and Shastipado addressed yesterday's meeting chaired by Digri Raza Rampodo. The speakers urged all the indigenous peoples of the northern region to celebrate 'Karam festival' for ensuring their cultural rights. The Adivasi Samajik Sangathon Parishad and Pargana Parishad will jointly organise 'Karam festival', the largest religious festivals of the Santal community, on September 26 and September 27 at Gunigram school playground in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi.
