10 killed in Moulvibazar, 642 attacked in B'baria

Diarrhoea is spreading Moulvibazar and Brahmanbaria districts. Eleven people were killed in Komolganj upazila in Moulvibazar till Monday while at least 118 were attacked in two upazilas in Brahmanbaria in the last two days. Our Moulvibazar Correspondent reported that Champaroy tea garden area in Kamalganj upazila was worst affected by diarrhoea where at least 11 people were killed. The garden authorities however admitted death of four laborers while Kamalganj upazila health officials said two diarrhea patients died at the upazila health complex till Monday. They said over 37 people were attacked with diarrhea and 17 of them were admitted to Kamalganj upazila health complex. Other patients were admitted to private clinics. Komolganj Upazila Health Administrator (UHA) Dinesh Sutradhar told this correspondent that several medical teams were working in different affected areas in the upazila, including Champaray tea garden. Labours in different labour sheds in the garden claimed that 11 people die of diarrhea till Monday. They identified dead as Fulkumari Gour, 55, Rita Gour, 15, Man Kumari Karmaker, 55, Dhananjoy Karmaker, 12, Champa Mushur, 38, Ram Kishan Teli, 55, Ashad Ali, 35, Purnima Karmaker, 5, Abu Parshi, 7, Chanmoni Karmaker, 50, and Asrob Miah, 30. Moulvibazar Civil Surgeon Afaz Uddin said lack of consciousness and health care facilities were responsible for deaths in the tea garden. Medical teams have been sent there and water purifying tablets and oral saline are being distributing among labour families, he added. Moulvibazar Deputy Commissioner Md Alkama Siddiquee visited the garden and other diarrhea affected areas in Kamalganj. The upazila health administration on Sunday suspended a field staff for alleged negligence to duty, officials said. In Brahmanbaria, at least 119 people were attacked with diarrhoea in last 24 hours. The disease was reported from Bedbaria, Chindiara, Malihata, Lalpur, Harashpur, Gazipur, Malaish, Dharanti, Chunta and Panishyar villages in Brhamanbaria Sadar, Nabinagar and Sarail ujpazilas, sources at Civil Surgeon's office said. The number of patients is increasing. At least 87 patients were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital and upazila health complexes, the sources said. Of them, 50 were admitted to Sadar Hospital, 14 to Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex, eight to Sarail Upazila Health Complex, six to Kasba Upazila Health Complex and four each were admitted Akhaura and Nasirnagar upazila health complexes. One patient was admitted to Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex. The sources said that in last one week, at least 642 people were attacked with diarrhoea in the district. Every day, at least 50 patients are being treated in Sadar Hospital where there are only nine beds in diarrhoea ward. This correspondent saw patients being treated on floors at the hospital yesterday. Due to lack of space, 30 diarrhoea patients were accommodated on the first floor of Nursing Institute under Brahmanbaria Sadar hospital. Talking to this correspondent, some patients alleged that they had to buy intra-venous (IV) saline from nearby medicine shops. Staff Nurse Samsun Neher said they advise patients to buy IV saline from outside as it is in short supply for last 2-3 days. Another Staff Nurse, Anwara Begum, claimed that they were supplying IV saline to all patients. Contacted, Medical Officer (MO) Md. Shawkat Hossain said the number of diarrhoea patients suddenly increased in last 2-3 days, which might have caused short supply of IV saline. A message has been sent to higher authorities and adequate quantities if IV saline will reach in a day or two, he said.
