Another breach in Kobadak dam, fresh areas flooded in Shyamnagar

The flood situation has deteriorated in Assassuni upazila as four more villages were inundated following collapse of another embankment of Kabodak river at Harishkhali yesterday morning. The newly inundated villages are Harishkhali, Moderbaria, Banyartala and Dargatalarati. With the four, 16 villages have so far reeled under floodwater. The situation may deteriorate further as water is gushing through the two breaches in the embankments. On Friday, 12 villages were inundated following collapse of the Kabodak embankment at Kurikaunia due to pressure of water. At least 120 yards of the embankment was washed away at Harishkhali at about 11 am yesterday morning, locals said. A sluice gate there also collapsed, they said. Over 25,000 people in the area are marooned and newly transplanted Amon seedlings on about 2000 acres went under water. Shrimps in at least 450 enclosures have also been washed away, they said. The other affected villages are Kurikaunia, Pratapnagar, Nakna, Goalpara, Khajra, Sanatankati, Baintala, Gar Padmapukur, Kalyanpur, Shirshira, Goalkati and Rayerbeel in Pratapnagar union. Local people said cracks appeared on the embankment on Friday and they were trying to repair those, but in vain. Satkhira Water Development Board (WDB) officials said they are trying to reconstruct the collapsed embankment on an emergency basis. Talking to this correspondent Maj Alamgir of joint forces who visited the spot yesterday said the situation may deteriorate as waters are gushing through the breached embankments. Local administration with the help of people will try to reconstruct the embankment by building ring dams, he said.
