Malaria kills 74 in Khagrachhari in three months
Speakers at a discussion held here yesterday as part of an awareness campaign about malaria expressed their grave concern over outbreak of the disease in an epidemic form in three hill districts of Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Bandarban recently.
Global Fund for Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), an international organisation, in collaboration with the Health Department of government started the awareness campaign from this month.
District Health Office and Khagrachhari Hill District Council jointly organised the discussion for journalists at Khagrachhari civil surgeon's (CS) conference hall.
Khagrachhari civil surgeon (CS) Dr Abu Taher presided the discussion while it was attended by Khagrachhari Hill District Council (KHDC) chairman Monindra Lal Tripura as chief guest.
Malaria killed at least 74 people and attacked over 10,000 others in Khagrachhari alone in 3 months, speakers said quoting official records. But the actual figure might be 10 to 20 times higher, they said.
Among others, KHDC member Sanu Mong Marma, Abu Bakker Siddhique, programme officer of Malaria and Parasite Disease Control Dr Soharab Hossainn Sarker, Dr Nazrul Islam and Dr Belayet Hossain addressed.
Global Fund for Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) is trying to control malaria in the hill district in collaboration with government and 14 NGOs led by Brac.
