Deposition by PWs resumes
Deposition of prosecution witnesses (PWs) in the murder case filed in connection with grenade attack on British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury resumed at the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal here yesterday, tribunal sources said.
Tribunal judge Dipyoman Sarker examined two PWs named Kawsar Ahmed and Aziz Ahmed, they said. With their deposition, 31 out of 57 PWs were examined within 13 days. Recording of their deposition started on August 26. The deposition will continue till October 9.
Three people were killed and Bangladesh-born British high commissioner along with 70 others were injured in the grenade attack on the premises of the shrine of Hajrat Shahjalal (RA) here after Juma prayers on May 21, 2004. The victims are Kamal Uddin, assistant sub-inspector of Special Branch (SB) of police, Zobayer Ahmed Rubel, a college student and Habibur Rahman Habib.
Scotland Yard officials of UK also visited the spot.
As names of 20 accused were dropped from the charge sheet, the district judge here acquitted them of charges on July 12. They were arrested from the shrine area after the attack on May 21, 2004.
Later, the cases were transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as police failed to find out clues to the attack.
CID filed two charge sheets, one under Explosives Act and the other for killing. Four persons were shown as accused. They are outlawed Harkatul Jihad chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, his brother Mofizur Rahman and HUJI operatives Delwar Hossain Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul.
