Satkhira BNP bigwig chargesheeted for 'cheating, extortion'

Police yesterday pressed charges against Satkhira district BNP vice-president Abdur Rouf in a case for alleged extortion, cheating and defalcation of funds. Rouf is also general secretary Satkhira Bus Minibus Owners Association and chairman of Alipur Union Parishad (UP) in Sadar upazila. Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Sub-inspector (SI) Akhtaruzzaman of Sadar police station submitted the charge sheet before a magistrate court here. Osman Faruk, son of former UP member late Abdul Mazed of Alipur village in Sadar upazila, filed the case with Sadar police station on April 18. The plaintiff alleged that Rouf had been cultivating shrimp on 461 bighas of water body land including his (Osman) 37 bighas for long. A case on ownership of 27 out of his 37 bighas was pending with court. As the case was pending, Rouf stopped paying him the lease money since 1993, Osman said in the compliant. Later, in an arbitration, it was decided that the lease money would be kept with Rouf till the case is settled. An amount of Tk 17, 14, 000 as lease money remained with Rouf till filing of the case, Osman said. The court later in a verdict said the land belonged to him but Rouf did not return the money, the plaintiff alleged. Rather Rouf demanded money whenever he went to him to get back the lease money, Osman alleged. Rouf is now on the run since promulgation of emergency and several raids were made in his house to arrest him, Satkhira Sadar thana officer-in-charge Safiqur Rahman said.
