Keep Baghaichhari under Rangamati admn
All Union Parishad (UP) chairmen, members and poura commissioners of Baghaichhari upazila in Rangamati at a press conference yesterday protested transfer of the upazila under Khagrachhari district administration.
They urged the authorities to immediately stop the ongoing transfer process. Bagharchhari is the largest upazila in Rangamati district.
People of Baghaichhari will suffer and lose financially if the upazila is placed under Khagrachhari district administration, the public representatives said at the press conference held at Rangamati Press Club.
They said sources of income of indigenous people in Baghaichhari will be seriously affected if the upazila is transferred to Khagrachhari. Now they can easily transport agricultural products, bamboos, timber and other goods to Rangamati markets through watereays. Transporting goods to Khagrachhari would be difficult due to lack of good road links, they told the press conference.
Baghaichhari is under Ranamati district since British period and its people are accustomed to handling things at land offices and administrative offices in Rangamati, they said.
Earlier, the public representatives submitted an application to the Rangamati deputy commissioner to scrap the on going transfer process immediately.
They said the government should not transfer the upazila ignoring opinion of majority of its population and warned of more protest programmes if it is not stopped.
The press conference was addressed by, among others Union Parishad chairmen Priyananda Chakma, Biswajit Chakma, Chit Chakma, Uttrayan Chakma, Baghaichhari municipal commissioner MA Rashid and Md. Siraj Uddin.
