268 workers, employees quit jobs under VRS
Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) has accepted resignation of 223 permanent workers and 45 officials and employees of state-owned Alim Jute Mills (AJM) which was laid off for one month with effect from September 22 on ground of severe financial crisis.
Earlier on last August 12, 801 workers, 50 employees and six officials applied to the mill management to quit jobs under voluntary retirement scheme (VRS).
A notice was issued by the mill management on Tuesday stating BJMC's acceptance of resignation of 223 out of 801 workers, 43 out of 50 employees and two out of six officials.
Meanwhile, a group of workers of laid off Alim Jute Mills led by president of their union Abdus Salam held a press conference at Khulna Press Club yesterday.
CBA leader Abdus Salam said at the press conference that laid off workers had been passing their days in severe financial crisis.
He said Alim Jute Mills had always been a profitable enterprise since its nationalisation in 1972.
He blamed BJMC for not allocating funds for buying raw jute to keep the profit earning enterprise running.
The CBA leader, however, demanded immediate withdrawal of lay-off and payment of arrear wages for 33 weeks, lay-off benefits and all other dues.
