2 R&H engineers sent to jail on surrender
A court in Sylhet sent Roads & Highways (R&H) Department executive engineers Abdul Khaleque Miah and Shafiqul Islam to jail on surrender yesterday.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Binoy Kumar Majumder in a verdict on September 18 gave five years' simple imprisonment to Abdul Khaleque Miah and Shafiqul Islam in an extortion case against them and former BNP lawmaker Naser Rahman, son of former finance minister Saifur Rahman.
Naser Rahman was given nine years imprisonment in the case. The two engineers were tried in absentia.
Moulvibazar BNP vice-president Wali Siddique, a close aide to Naser, was also given five years' imprisonment in the same case.
The judge however acquitted Moulvibazar Pourashava chairman and district BNP secretary Foizul Karim Moyun and R & H sub-divisional engineer Monwar Sadique of charges in the case.
Contractor Nuruzzaman filed the extortion case on February 17 against Naser Rahman and six others including the two engineers.
