An extortion case was filed with Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station against detained Kishoreganj Municipality chairman Abu Taher Miah. Following the case filed on Sunday night by Mofiz Miah of Batrish Monipuripara in the town against the chairman and Rokon, a surveyor of the municipality, the case was sent to Kishoreganj Cognisance Court-1 yesterday afternoon. According to case statement, a group of 8-10 people led by Taher and Rokon on September 26 damaged Mofiz's a brick-built house, three tin-shed houses and looted belongings worth Tk 2 lakh from there. After a written notice from Taher, Mofiz met him at the latter's office on July 22 last year when the chairman demanded Tk 1 lakh as bribe, goes the case statement. As Mofiz refused, Taher threatened him with dire consequences and the attack on his properties on September 26 was a sequel to this. On October 9, the joint forces led by a first class magistrate caught Taher red-handed when he was taking bribe from a trader in the town. Taher was a BNP nomination seeker from Kishoreganj-3 constituency (Kishoreganj Sadar) for the parliament election scheduled for January 22 (later cancelled).
