State of the nation

Sikander Ahmed, Niketon, Gulshan-1, Dhaka
Further to my letter on the subject last month, it is a source of great disappointment for all to see that we are heading for a free-fall in future with those in power sitting on the sidelines without a clue, but at the same time willing to wash their hands in the flowing Ganga. The beady, seedy and greedy eyes are glowing as the economy of loot rapidly takes hold. Thoroughfares, businesses and our very lives are no longer safe and one ventures out only at one's own risk, especially after dusk. The educational institutions give more importance to the 3Ts- tenders, tolls and terror than the 3Rs. You buy stones with rice, sand with flour, chemicals with cooking oil and fish, and even papaya seeds instead of black pepper, ad nauseum. Adulteration of food items is as extensive as adulteration of integrity, dedication and morals. We must have had a bumper crop of radishes last winter, because of late, thousands of them are being dangled before the gullible public in the form of the Tk.6-8,000 crore Dhaka Metro/Flyways etc, 10-15,000 crore Padma Bridge, and the whopping 60,000crore Sonadia/ Kutubdia Deep Sea Port sponsored by the big man at Chittagong. In the meantime, a constant stream of our valiant workers are being kicked out from their jobs overseas and have to resort to hunger and sit-in dharnas at the airport. Meanwhile, water shortage, load shedding, law and order, BDR crisis, prices of essentials, economic meltdown, crackdown on corruption, etc have all been forgotten, maybe permanently as tit-for-tat revenge comes first. No doubt, the last CTG is responsible for this state of affairs. They knew very well the past records of the contestants, so should have foreseen what would happen if either came to power. Therefore, it was incumbent on them to have put in place remedial measures before their departure. They should have established a totally Autonomous Ministry for Prioritisation and Implementation of Manifesto Pledges (M-PIMP), answerable to no-one except their own conscience and with full veto powers, whose sole job would be to see to it that the government in power did not deviate from their election manifestoes and that these were implemented first before they put their greedy fingers on any other pie.
