100 days of AL govt
An opinion poll survey of The Daily Star-Neilsen shows that the Awami League-led government enjoys an encouraging public support in their policies & actions in price control, economic management, and its handling of BDR carnage. The survey also indicates poor or low performance of the government in its handling of students activities and management of the administration and the judiciary.
The outcome of this survey should boost the morale of this new government. But there is another side of the coin. It is true that the AL government just at the start of its honeymoon period had to face an unprecedented crisis of BDR incident and proved its maturity in successfully handling it. But there is widespread rumour that some outside force in collaboration with inside elements planned & executed the BDR massacre to weaken or even destroy our national defence capability. It is the responsibility of the government to let the nation know the truth behind this incident.
This partial success of the government will evaporate very soon if it does not seriously review its policy towards its student front. The prime minister gave a right signal by distancing herself from BCL. But the way one VC of a public university was supporting the BCL faction of his university & directly blaming the other student front is a very bad sign. A university is the highest centre for education and its VC and the teachers should not work or even speak for any political party. The prime minister on many occasions spoke about the criteria of selecting the efficient bureaucrats. But practically what the people have seen in the cases of BSMMU, BTCL, DCC etc. and recently the ACC is very different.
These cases show that the government is pursuing the policy of engaging “my man” everywhere. Recently, one of my friends, the VC of a public Engineering University, expressed his agony as some of his fellow colleagues are trying to unseat him on political reasons although he is a dedicated teaching professional without any political identity. The Awami League came to power through a landslide victory with a slogan for change and may experience the bitter history repeating, if its actions do not match its words.
