A dying city

In 1950, 30% of the world's population lived in cities and the figure has risen to 50% in 2006 and is predicted to reach 60% by 2030. In our country, people's rushing towards Dhaka has broken all records, no doubt. The present population of Dhaka is said to be around 1.50 crore and the figure will be increasing nobody knows what the limit is. Dhaka cannot bear the heavy load of the huge population. A sizable portion of this population lives in slums. Here people are suffering from water scarcity, shortage of electricity, gas, pure air, and what not! But we are coming to Dhaka. President Ziaur Rahman took the initiative to transfer some departments/ organisations to some district towns. He held some ministerial meetings in the district towns. In those meetings he ordered to transfer the head office of BIWTA to Barisal, Tea Board to Sylhet etc. But the departmental heads and other big bosses did not want to leave Dhaka, thus the great initiative has not produced much.
