Death of the scientist
It is with great sadness that we received the news of the death of the country's eminent nuclear physicist Dr. M. A. Wazed Miah. Dr. Wazed was apparently a straightforward, humble and principled Bangladeshi. He shared the outcome of his academic brilliance, intellectualities and professional achievements with people of Bangladesh and others through, for example, the books he wrote on thermodynamics and electromagnetism. He was not visibly active in politics in the post independent Bangladesh but he played - in a constructive fashion - crucial behind-the-scene roles in meeting political challenges and harnessing political opportunities - both during peace time and in emergencies in Bangladesh.
Dr. Wazed's vision, mission, efforts and achievements (both within and outside of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission) pertaining to the peaceful use of atomic energy in Bangladesh - are commendable. It is a pity - though, he could not achieve his vision of a nuke powered Bangladesh during his lifetime.
Given that nuclear power reactors are among viable options for generating power in the present day power-starved Bangladesh, it is to be seen how best and quickest the current effort towards nuclear generation in the country could inter alia be instrumental in transforming Bangladesh into a fast growing, reliable and dependable user of nuke power. In that respect, it is expected Bangladesh will not elect to go for weak, corrupt and substandard technologies against the backdrop of say, cheap price and diplomatic favour. It is also expected that safety requirements associated with the nuclear generation will not be sacrificed - in the future - on account of corruption and other anti-people, as well as anti-state activities.
Bangladesh will sadly miss Dr. Wazed - we too will miss him. May Almighty God bless him! Our condolences to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the family!
