Ha-Meem factories burned down (June 30, 2009)
There are a few motives that I can see:
1. Cheap labour exploitation caused this mass insurgence. 2. Some of our neighbouring countries are jealous of our RMG achievements. 3. It's to destabilize our national economy. 4. Many neighbouring country's newspapers, public media actually exposes their paranoid position of our RMG sector achievements. 5. Illiterate, incompetent, unconscious population must be vulnerable to conspiracies. 6. It is an earlier signal that we need to diversify our economic dependencies; therefore, other sectors (ship building, logistics and transportation, construction material, light machineries etc) must be prioritised.
SNH Whoever vandalises and burns properties, must be punished. It became just a habit in Bangladesh.
Nagorik This culture of destruction must end now. The government failed to protect the factories. It had plenty of warnings that a calamity of this magnitude was certain to take place following the tragic deaths of 2 workers. It was irresponsible of the owners to marginalise the deaths of these workers, especially the first death which sparked a chain of events culminating in the fiery destruction of several factories.
Shaheen Subhan The RMG industry is one of the major contributors to the national GDP. We should not tolerate such misconduct by a minor group of people trying to achieve their own agenda by damaging national resources.
Hossain What the workers have done is totally unacceptable. It will harm them and also our national economy. There might be provocation but it also shows the failure of the labourer leaders.
Shah Abdul Hannan This is a conspiracy against the country.
Ryan Why most of the time compliant factory is attacked? Is it pre planned? Who will be the gainer if compliant factory goes shut down?
Sabiha Sultana I think the management overall failed to control the situation. Also irresponsible comments from our Home Minister made the culprits more reckless.
Faruk Ha-Meem group will probably not recover the financial loss in another 10 years. Will the government compensate this entrepreneur by cash and will they also pay the 4,000 workers their salaries in cash? Or is it the labour organisation that will take the responsibility for paying the workers as they were the ones who went into destruction?
Sohel Ahmed It is the responsibility of the govt to protect this sector which earns a major portion of our foreign exchange and provide employment to hundreds of thousands of workers. Home ministry should admit its failure.
Mohammed Uddin The authority of the company should consider the demand of the workers. Government should take care of it positively.
Omar Faruk This nation will remain poor only because of the barbaric attitude of the people. The incident that took place in Ha-Meem Group complex is definitely an act of conspiracy. Those who do not want us to thrive they are the ones who could be behind this conspiracy to destroy our garment sector.
Minhaj Ahmed There may be some conspiracy behind this to destroy this promising garment sector. The government should take it seriously and resolve this problem as soon as possible.
Sheikh Marefat Tarikul Islam There should be proper law for salary and a court will see who are not following the law and order, not other people. There should not be so-called union, who are the enemy of general workers.
Bazlu I don't understand why the government is not giving due importance to the matter. Frequent labour unrest shows government's reluctance to interfere with the RMG owners in several issues like ensuring proper salary for the workers. On the other hand, owners have to count a lot of money for vandalism and unrest. We want to see a permanent solution where labourer's rights will be protected.
