The other day I was watching the prime- time news in a private TV channel. It was a break and commercials were being aired. At one stage, I was really captivated to see a family planning advertisement campaigning with the slogan “One child is enough; son or daughter”. The Dutch-Bangla Bank really deserves thanks for joining the campaign to address the number one problem of Bangladesh, Population Boom. But I am not going to write today anything about the problem, its challenges and the way out of it. Suddenly, an idea came to my mind and I want to share it you with my co-readers of The Daily Star.
The idea is making for the big companies including cell phone operators an advertisement addressing burning issues. It should be mandatory. Many of the companies, both national and multinational, and the cell phone operators are earning huge amounts of money. And every day, we are listening about social corporate responsibility. So the government, forgetting the intention to reap benefit for the party (only God knows if they can do it!), can list the problems facing the country and request the organisations, including NGOs and aid/development agencies, to make an advertisement each addressing one problem.
If we can make a list of ten to twenty problems, (poverty, hunger, population control, climate change, polluted rivers, transport, health e.g), the country should address them urgently and urge the organisations to make an ad each with the expertise they have. I think it will have a big impact on the people. I, as a citizen of the country, am making a fervent appeal to the government as well as the organisations to make it happen for the sake of the poor and hapless people of the country.
