Spirit of Ramadan

Ramadan is the month of self-restraint. If we go by the spirit of Ramadan and teachings of Islam, then consumption of food items should go down. As a result, demand for food items should also go down and in that case dwindling demand would automatically force the prices down. As a matter of fact, this should be the situation in the Muslim majority countries during Ramadan. But the opposite is seen everywhere. The spirit of Ramadan and the teachings of Islam being taken out of the context year after year, consumption of food goes up. So much so that for the last few years successive governments in Bangladesh are facing the challenge of their existence during Ramadan over the prices of food items! It got worse when the print and electronic media jumped into the bandwagon. DS should come forward to lead the change of tone on this front. Instead of pressurizing the govt to tackle the prices of food items during Ramadan, you should appeal to the conscience of God-fearing Muslims reminding them of the true spirit of Ramadan and the teachings of Islam for this holy month. Consume less to be able to empathize with the fellow Muslims who have less to consume!
