Pakistan high commissioner, spouse safe after fire at Gulshan home

A fire that broke out at Pakistan High Commissioner Imran Haider’s residence in Dhaka’s Gulshan early Thursday was doused within 20 minutes, fire officials said.

Fire Service and Civil Defence’s Media Officer Inspector Anwarul Islam told The Daily Star that the fire service received information about the incident around 4:56am.

Two firefighting units from the Baridhara Fire Station rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control within 20 minutes, he said.

The fire originated in the high commissioner's TV room, where a television was damaged, the official said.

Shabid Ullah Wazir, spokesperson for the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka, told The Daily Star on Thursday night that a fire broke out at the residence of the Pakistan high commissioner around 3:00am on Thursday.

Firefighters were called in and extinguished the blaze, he said.

As a precautionary measure, the high commissioner and his spouse were taken to a hospital. Their health condition is stable, Shabid added.
