Protesters today blocked entry to the airport in Sri Lanka to bar Mahinda Rajapaksa, his family, and lawmakers from leaving the country following a spree of violent protests across the island nation, local media reported.

Agitated protesters today took position in Katunayake's Free Trade Zone and blocked the entry to Bandaranaike International Airport, the most important airport in the country, amid an ongoing emergency declared nationwide following the deadly protests yesterday, reports News First, a private TV channel in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has recently been witnessing public protests as the country is undergoing a severe economic crisis due to low foreign currency reserves and rising inflation.

The country's Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday submitted his resignation to the president.

The country gave emergency powers on Tuesday to its military and police to detain people without warrants, after a day of clashes that killed seven people and injured more than 200.
