Baishakh, in HistoryAnd Heritage
HIGHLIGHTING the culture of Bangladesh, the nation welcomed the Bangla year 1420 last week with huge enthusiasm. Dhaka's Ramna area, traditionally the venue for such celebrations to take off, was all festive. People thronged the area from dawn and till the late hours of the day. They were there for the Chhayanat programme, one that has become part of heritage. They participated in other cultural shows as well and took part in the Mongol Shobhajatra, attired largely in red and white. Having panta-ilish, a traditional meal, and buying things from street vendors were sights common and soothing to the eyes on Pahela Baishakh. The ethos of Mongol Shobhajatra this year was a call for the nation to be free of war criminals, a goal symbolized through displays of demonised effigies of war criminals. The effigies stood out in the procession, testament to the indomitable will of a people determined to reclaim history from those who sought to mutilate it into a tale of unadulterated falsehood. On Pahela Baishakh 1420, it was truth that was held high, all across Bangladesh.
