Clashes at BSMMU, Shahbagh: Sayedee’s son among 5,000 sued

Police have sued more than 5,000 supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir in two cases over the clashes with police in Dhaka after the death of convicted war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

Sayedee's son Masud Sayedee is one among the accused in the cases.

Sub-inspectors Jabbar and Salah Uddin Kader yesterday filed the two cases with Shahbagh and Paltan police stations respectively against 5,000 people, including 20 named persons.

Four named suspects and around 5,000 unidentified suspects were accused in the case filed with Shahbagh Police Station on charges of obstructing police in carrying out duty, assault on law enforcers, and carrying out arson attacks on vehicles, said Nur Mohammad, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Apart from Masud, three other named accused in the case are Jamaat leaders Saiful Islam and Hamidur Rahman Azad and former Shibir leader Shafiqul Islam Masud.

In the case filed with Paltan Police Station, 16 named people and 150 unnamed supporters of Jamaat and Shibir were made accused.

Paltan police arrested the 16 people from Baitul Mukarram mosque area in this connection, according to the case statement.

In the case statement, police also said they fired 519 rounds of rubber bullets, 142 rounds of pellets, 34 tear shell canisters, 39 kinetic projectiles, 23 seven bang grenades and 30 sound grenades to control the situation.

The Jamaat-Shibir supporters locked into clashes at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka following Sayedee's death on Monday.

At least one person was killed and 70 others were injured after clashes erupted yesterday in Dhaka and some other parts of the country over the namaz-e-janaza of Sayedee.
