A five-day-old girl was stolen from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital this evening.
Till filling of this report, police were scrutinising the CCTV footage of the hospital to trace the whereabouts of the newborn, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
The child, Asma, was undergoing treatment at the NICU after her birth in a private hospital in the port city.
Baby's father Abu Md Noman, who hails from the district's Lohagara upazila, told The Daily Star, "According to the hospital rules, no one is allowed in the NICU with the baby from 8:00am to 2:00pm."
"When my mother-in-law, who looked after the baby, went to the NICU around 2:00pm, she found my daughter missing and reported to the on-duty doctors and nurses. Later, the matter was informed to the police," he added.
CMCH Director Brigadier General Shamim Ahsan told the newspaper that the NICU is a secure unit and outsiders are not allowed in the facility. "We learned the matter around 5:00pm and started the investigation," he said.
Sontosh Kumar Chakma, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station, said police were checking the CCTV footage to find the criminals.
