SI lands in jail over rape charges

A Dhaka court yesterday sent a police sub-inspector to jail after he surrendered to it in a case filed over the rape of a woman.

Judge Begum Mafroza Parvin of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 passed the order after rejecting SI Shariful Islam's bail prayer.

On August 10, the tribunal issued an arrest warrant against him after accepting the probe report submitted by the CID.

According to the case statement, Shariful first met the woman at a programme in Dhaka in 2020.

Later, Shariful raped the woman after promising to marry her. When she became pregnant, the accused took her to a hospital and forced her to have an abortion.
