Police allegedly baton‑charged several jobseekers awaiting appointment as assistant teachers at government primary schools while dispersing their sit‑in at Dhaka's Mirpur‑2 this afternoon.

The incident happened around 3:30pm in front of the Directorate of Primary Education, where candidates had been demonstrating to demand appointment letters and postings.

A video shared on social media showed police chasing and beating some demonstrators. Protesters claimed police asked them to leave, and when they refused, officers charged them with batons, leaving several injured.

However, Mostak Sarker, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Mirpur Division, denied the allegation.

He said police repeatedly requested demonstrators to clear the road and later gave a 10‑minute ultimatum. When they did not comply, police dispersed them after 30 minutes to ease traffic.

The candidates were recommended under the Primary Assistant Teacher Recruitment 2025, with final results published on February 8, selecting 14,384 candidates. More than two months later, appointment letters have not been issued, prompting demonstrations that began yesterday at Shahbagh intersection.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj said yesterday that the recruitment process was progressing according to rules and urged protesters to suspend their movement to avoid public suffering.
