BMDC suspends registrations of 10 doctors over medical negligence, unprofessional conduct
The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has suspended the registration of 10 doctors for periods ranging from six months to two years over medical negligence and a lack of proper professional attitude.
The BMDC issued a circular on March 1, and the punitive action took effect the same day, BMDC Acting Registrar Liaquat Hossain confirmed to The Daily Star today.
The 54th council of the BMDC, held in January this year, handed down the punishments after allegations against the doctors were proven, he added.
During the suspension period, they will not be allowed to provide allopathic treatment in the country or identify themselves as medical doctors, according to notices published on the BMDC website.
BMDC sources said two other doctors were given warnings while eight were cleared of allegations.
Three doctors at JS Diagnostic and Medical Checkup Centre in Malibagh faced punitive actions over allegations related to the circumcision of 10-year-old Ahnaf Tahmin Ayham, who died in February 2024 during the procedure.
After the incident, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) asked BMDC to take punitive action against the doctors. The centre did not have approval to operate as a surgical facility and only held a licence for a diagnostic centre, DGHS officials said.
Of the three doctors, the registration of SM Muktadir and Ishtiaque Azad was suspended for two years, while Mahbub Morshed was suspended for six months.
Two doctors of United Medical College Hospital in Dhaka were also suspended over allegations related to the circumcision of five-year-old Ayaan Ahmed, who died during the procedure in December 2023.
Ayaan’s father, Md Shamim Ahmed, filed a case with Badda Police Station against the two doctors, unnamed directors, employees, and staff of the hospital.
The registrations of Saeed Sabbir Ahmed and and Tasnuva Mahzabeen were suspended for six months. Regarding Tasnuva, the circular noted that the authority did not find proof of medical negligence but did find a lack of proper professional attitude.
Additionally, Ashaq Ali, Shaikhul Arafat, and Marina Jesmin were suspended for six months in connection with one complaint, while Sohely Islam and Twohidur Rahman were suspended for one year in connection with another complaint.
Earlier in July last year, BMDC suspended the registration of 13 doctors for varying periods over different allegations. Eight doctors were issued warnings, while six others were cleared.
