Gunmen attack businessman’s car on Chattogram-Rangamati highway

Assailants opened fire on a moving car on the Chattogram-Rangamati highway in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram early Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 12:15am in the Charabattala area of Mekhal union. The car was being driven by Raozan businessman SM Shahidullah Rony, who is also the editor of the Dainik Priyo Shomoy.

He was returning home from Chattogram city when two men on a motorcycle blocked his car, threw a brick at it and fired three shots, Rony told reporters.

The bullets struck the rear side of the vehicle before the attackers fled. Rony was not injured.

He said the assailants apparently thought he was sitting in the back seat, as his driver usually drives the car.

“Today I was driving the car myself. After they threw the brick, I switched off the headlights. They probably did not realise that I was behind the wheel. That’s why I survived,” he said.

Rony added that he has disputes with several people over his business and that his house in Aman Bazar had previously come under attack.

Kazi Tarek Aziz, additional superintendent of police (Hathazari Circle), visited the scene and inspected the bullet-hit vehicle.

“The victim told us he has disputes with several people. We are investigating the incident and trying to identify those involved,” he said.
