Union-level Shibir leader stabbed to death over school committee dispute in Gaibandha
A local Islami Chhatra Shibir leader was stabbed to death today during a clash allegedly linked to the election for president of a primary school managing committee in Gaibandha’s Saghata upazila.
The deceased was identified as Saifullah Bari, 24, of Shimul Tair village. He was president of Shibir’s Bonarpara union unit.
Another individual named Salahuddin, 30, an associate of Saifullah, was injured in the same incident.
According to local sources, an altercation broke out at around 3:30pm at the Bonarpara Chourasta intersection between Habibullah, the headmaster of Kachua Government Primary School, and Mukul, a leader of Bonarpara union Jubo Dal, over the election of the managing committee president of the school.
Saifullah and Salahuddin, who were present at the scene, got locked in an argument with Mukul. Angered by this, Mukul, his brother Palash, and their associate Ashraf allegedly stabbed Saiful and Salahuddin with sharp weapon, leaving them critically injured.
Locals rescued them and first took them to the district sadar hospital, where the duty doctor pronounced Saifullah dead.
Confirming the clash, Gaibandha B-Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Muttazul told The Daily Star that Saifullah died after being beaten with bamboo sticks and stabbed in the neck during the incident.
“Additionally, an injured person has been sent to Bogura for advanced medical treatment,” he added.
The additional SP further said police have detained Ashraf, and operations are underway to detain others involved in the incident.
Mohammad Ali, convener of Saghata upazila BNP, told The Daily Star that Saghata upazila Jubo Dal is working to remove Mukul from Bonarpara union Jubo Dal.
