Bumper Potato Harvest
Harvesting of potatoes is going on at full swing at Munshinganj, the district which produces most of this vegetable in the country. But the growers are not happy despite a bumper crop as the price is low. They are fearing loss. Shortage of cold storage and high rent have added to the farmers' misery. District Agriculture Extension officials yesterday said a record 37,330 hectares of land have been brought under potato cultivation this season and about 12.5 lakh ton produce is expected. At present potato is selling at Tk 10 per kg at the growers level which sold at Tk 11 to 12 a couple of days ago. Cold storages are demanding Tk 350 to 360 for keeping a sack (80 kg) of potato- Tk 30 to 40 up from last year's rate.
