Change attitude towards indigenous people

Monjurul Ahsan, Center for Natural Resource Studies, Dhaka
Bangladesh has a multicultural environment where ethnic minorities' rights have been accepted by its constitution. During the British colonial period, people of this land had been treated as natives and inferiors. Today we hold the same view about indigenous people of the country. Even a newspaper like TDS is reporting with the same viewpoint. The report published on July 21 said that Santals eat mongoose, fox and wild cat; and Musahar people's favourite food item is rat. A picture of a Musahar family eating rat was also published alongside the report. It seemed like they were some exotic species in human society who eat rats! Rather than going in-depth about the ethnic livelihood issues, the content and picture represented a narrow perspective. We need to treat people of ethnic minorities as our fellow human beings and change our backward mindset.
