Sagar-Runi murder case: ICT chief prosecutor says evidence points to a cultural personality
The chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today said investigators had found preliminary evidence suggesting the involvement of a cultural personality in the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam made the remarks at his office while responding to questions from journalists.
However, he declined to disclose the person’s identity, citing the interests of the ongoing investigation.
On enforced disappearances, Aminul said cases that fall within the jurisdiction of crimes against humanity would be tried at the tribunal.
Other cases of enforced disappearance would be tried in the courts concerned, he added.
Earlier on Thursday, a prosecutor said investigators had uncovered a clue in the Sagar-Runi murder case while probing a separate case.
Sagar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered at their flat in Dhaka's Poshchim Rajabazar on February 11, 2012.
Azizul Haque, additional superintendent of the Police Bureau of Investigation and the investigating officer in the case, declined to comment when contacted by The Daily Star, saying the investigation was ongoing.
However, another official involved in the investigation said the team had received no such information so far.
“We will speak with the prosecution team about the matter,” the official said, requesting anonymity.
