Ex-DMP chief Habibur, 2 other cops sentenced to death over Rampura shootings, killings

Two others received prison terms in the crimes against humanity case

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 today sentenced three former police officials, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death for killing two people and shooting two others in Rampura during the July 2024 uprising.

The condemned convicts are former additional deputy commissioner of the DMP's Khilgaon Zone, Rashedul Islam, and former officer-in-charge of Rampura Police Station, Mashiur Rahman.

The tribunal also sentenced former sub-inspector Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan to life imprisonment, while Chanchal Chandra Sarkar was handed 20 years' in prison in the crimes against humanity case.

Among them only Chanchal is in custody, while the other four convicts remain on the run.

Formal charges were submitted against the five on August 6 last year.

Habibur has already been sentenced to death in a separate crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Dhaka's Chankharpul on August 5, 2024.

The accused face charges of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, complicity, facilitation, abetment, incitement, failure to prevent or punish crimes, and command responsibility under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973.

According to the prosecution, six-year-old Musa was shot and critically injured during police action on July 19, 2024. The bullet passed through the child and fatally struck his grandmother, Maya Islam. Musa survived after treatment, but Maya died of her injuries.

Another victim, Md Nadim, was also shot dead in the same incident.

In a separate incident the same day, a video that went viral on social media showed 18-year-old Amir Hossain hanging from the ledge of an under-construction building. The footage appeared to show two policemen firing at him from close range while he desperately clung to the edge.
