A furniture shop owner in Bogura has been arrested on charges of attacking a stray dog with a sharp weapon, leaving it so severely injured that it required emergency surgery.
Md Swapan, 45, of Kanachgari area, was arrested by Bogura Detective Branch police early today.
Ibrahim Ali, officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station, confirmed the arrest, adding that police would produce Swapan before court today.
The case was filed last night by Md Emran Hossain, a convenor member of the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), with Bogura Sadar Police Station.
According to the case statement, volunteers, responding to reports, found a black-and-white animal critically injured in a drain near Independent Hospital yesterday.
The dog was rushed to a local pet clinic, where a medical team -- including District Livestock Officer Kazi Ashraful Islam, Upazila Livestock Officer Md Raihan, and Veterinary Surgeon Lutfar Rahman -- stabilised its condition through emergency treatment.
Md Raihan said the dog suffered a deep wound on its back after being attacked with a sharp weapon, causing heavy bleeding. He added that following surgery, it is now in stable condition but remains under observation.
