Man confesses to killing 5-year-old in Savar

A man arrested over the killing of five-year-old Abdur Rahman in Savar's Ashulia gave a confessional statement before a court in Dhaka today.

Saiful Islam, 30, was produced before a Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, where he confessed to the murder, Mohammad Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station told The Daily Star.

“A press briefing will be held tomorrow to provide details. Senior officials will brief the media,” he added.

Police said Abdur Rahman’s body was recovered from the rooftop of a four-storey house owned by one Harunur Rashid in Ashulia's Pashchim Bhadaile about three hours after he went missing on August 19.

The child’s body was found stuffed inside a plastic sack, with red adhesive tape wrapped around his neck and rice and polythene stuffed into his mouth.

Saiful, a tenant of the same house, was detained that night. Police later recovered scattered rice and remnants of adhesive tape from his residence, while CCTV footage also showed suspicious movements.

The following day, Saiful was shown arrested in a case filed by the child’s father, Md Shahid Mia of Bagbari, Melandaha upazila, Jamalpur, and taken to court. After being remanded for the second time, Saiful confessed.
