Ward‑level BNP activist hacked to death in Dhaka’s Sabujbagh

A ward‑level BNP activist was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants in Dhaka’s Sabujbagh area on Tuesday evening.

The victim, Palash, 36, was attacked around 7:30pm in an alley near the Rajarbagh water pump, according to police, friends, and family members.

His friends rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead around 10:00pm.

Palash’s friend Md Hira said he used to drive for a rent‑a‑car service but was currently unemployed. He was involved with BNP politics in Ward‑5 of Sabujbagh. Palash was first taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital and later referred to DMCH, where he died. Hira added that Palash was close to Liton Khan, president of Ward‑5 BNP.

At DMCH, Palash’s sister Jyotsna Akhter said their family is from Sonapur village in Raipur upazila of Lakshmipur. Palash had been living in the Madartek area of Sabujbagh with his wife.

Sabujbagh Police Station Sub‑inspector Saifur Rahman confirmed the incident and said police visited the hospital after receiving information. A team was working at the scene to gather details, he added.

Meanwhile, Inspector (Investigation) of Sabujbagh Police Station Ismail Hussain Khan told The Daily Star around 1:30am Wednesday that the murder stemmed from a financial transaction. “Some people owed Palash money. When he went to recover the loan, he was hacked to death,” he said.
