BNP violating electoral code of conduct, alleges Nahid
National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Dhaka-11 candidate Nahid Islam today alleged that the BNP is violating the electoral code of conduct and threatening NCP activists by filing false cases and picking up supporters.
“We are witnessing an atmosphere of fear in different areas of my constituency,” Nahid told journalists during his election campaign at Queens Garden while inaugurating his campaign office there.
Nahid alleged that BNP posters are being hung from electric wires, which was in clear violation of the electoral code of conduct. But, he alleged his banners and posters were being torn down.
The NCP leader said that the BNP had drawn up a list of NCP well-wishers, supporters, and activists and were threatening to detain them, file false cases, or ‘deal with them’ after the polls.
Nahid also said there were already signs of hooliganism. “But we want people to cast their vote freely and fearlessly, and we are only trying to ensure that."
He also said, “If we see the Election Commission lose its neutrality at the final stage, we will launch an all-out movement against it. This is our warning,” he said.
He criticised the BNP’s use of family and farmer cards as a tactic to buy votes. “People do not trust these promises anymore. They want implementation because they have heard too many false assurances in the past,” he said.
Nahid said, “The measures taken so far are grossly inadequate compared to the responsibilities of a future government.”
Addressing local concerns, he highlighted water shortage and gas crises.
Nahid also said problems of land grabbing and illegal occupation have intensified since August 5 under a specific political group.
“Past land grabs continue, particularly by our rival candidate. We are committed to fighting corruption, discrimination, and authoritarianism, and pushing for national reforms,” he said.
Visiting Subastu Market on the same day, Nahid Islam said, “We do not want Bangladesh to return to the past. We will not tolerate the rise of a new autocracy.”
He also urged people to vote ‘Yes’ in the referendum, saying that the struggle Sharif Osman Hadi began for justice, fairness, and against authoritarianism would be carried forward.
“If we can form the government, ensuring justice for the killings of our brothers during the July uprising, including martyr Sharif Osman Hadi, will be one of our key agendas,” he added.
As part of the day-long campaign organised by the 10-party alliance that nominated NCP candidate Nahid Islam, public interactions were held in Banshtola, Nobodhara Road, Ekota Road and Nure Chala Bazar. In the afternoon, he visited Subastu Market, inaugurated an election office at Queens Garden, and held meetings in Sayed Nagar. The programme concluded with Isha prayers at Jameya Kareemiya.
