Our shaken garment industry

Engr. S.A. Mansoor, Dhaka
Our garment industry cannot afford any more delay in rectifying existing miserable safety standards. The sooner it is done, the better for the country's export trade. The BGMEA must act fast and ensure that adequate safety in all factories is quickly established. If they can provide me with transport facilities, as a retired professional engineer working in multinational and local factories manufacturing dangerous and explosive gases, and in a fire hazardous environment, I can help the BGMEA in a practical manner. The government should implement strict safety and environment parameters for ensuring factory safety in the garment sector. If needed, the industry can be given loans on easier terms, to ensure that rectification is done on a strictly tight time frame. All this will unfortunately open up various avenues of corruption, which must be avoided. Can we not, for once, rise above our known weakness for 'cash under the table', that has become an epidemic in our working lives?
