Overdue elections to municipalities
It is disappointing that more municipalities facing overdue elections are now in the same situation as the DCC's. The LGD secretary's explanation that delimitating the municipal boundaries is not yet complete and that delimitation is a “continuous process” is unacceptable. This excuse could be used by a government to delay elections indefinitely or at least until a more politically favourable time.
There is no reason that the timing of local elections should be decided by a separate level of government. The incorporation acts for city corporations should include a schedule for the regular holding of elections outlining term length and fixed election dates. Voters and candidates could prepare for the next elections ahead of time and elected officials would know how long they have to implement their programmes. Even better would be coordinating the staging of all local elections nation-wide at the same time for a more efficient use of resources.
