Practices against Ramadan spirit

Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad, Shropshire, UK
Ramadan teaches us to avoid sinful speech and behaviour. The act of fasting helps us to feel the pain and sufferings of the people less fortunate than us, who endure the hardship throughout the year. During Ramadan the activities of our politicians and the privileged upper class give a completely different picture. They remain busy holding lavish 'Iftar parties'. Sometimes these parties are for maintaining status, sometimes for political reasons, etc. It is against the ethos of Ramadan. It will be interesting if everybody takes note of their weight on the first and the last days of Ramadan. If there is a gain in weight, they should question the validity of their fasting.
