This has nothing to do with the RMG industry or the overseas buyers. The fault lies squarely, first with the owner of the building who constructed it by cutting corners, and secondly, the government bodies who certify and police the construction industry. Instead of blaming the wrong person or entity, we should take a deep breath and concentrate on identifying what and who are responsible and correcting the system so that it does not recur.

Sorry, but cheap clothes have nothing to do with this. This is creating millions of jobs in a country like Bangladesh and millions of customers worldwide. It's all about corruption, greed and political protection. Keep your eyes on the ball!

Why blame foreign buyers for lack of safety procedures in a Bangladeshi factory? Why did not Bangladesh institute national safety laws and proper inspection procedures? Don't forget that export of garments has provided jobs to millions in Bangladesh, people who otherwise would have been starving.

The commentary is trying to shift the blame on the buyers for the deaths of workers resulting from the callousness and greed of the manufacturers here. How are the buyers responsible for lack of fire safety and housing of the factories in unplanned buildings? The welfare of our labourers depends totally on us. All the recent accidents, resulting in hundreds of deaths, happened because the owners blatantly disregarded the existing rules and regulations.
Bangladeshi manufacturers in their competitiveness with each other, often run the prices to the ground to their own detriment. I am a retired garment manufacturer and I am speaking from experience. Blaming the buyers for all our faults is not fair. Everybody, including the buyers, has the right to shop around for the best price. There are hundreds of factories in Bangladesh that have work environment that can compete with the best in the world but, unfortunately, we don't hear about them.

It is the Bangladeshi garment factory owners who are competing against each other and letting these big foreign companies take advantage.
