ChatGPT can now read and send Apple Messages from a Mac
OpenAI has introduced an Apple Messages plug-in for ChatGPT that allows users to search conversations, prepare replies and send messages directly from the chatbot on macOS.
The plug-in is available across ChatGPT plans through the desktop app for Mac and can also be used with ChatGPT Work and Codex, according to OpenAI's product documentation.
Users can ask ChatGPT to locate information in their message history, analyse conversations, draft responses or send messages to contacts. TechCrunch reported that the integration can also perform tasks such as deleting messages and suggesting follow-up responses based on earlier conversations.
OpenAI has built an approval step into message sending. By default, ChatGPT requires the user to approve both the content and recipients before a message is sent. The company warns against enabling persistent approval because doing so removes the final opportunity to inspect a message before it is sent under the user's identity.
The integration also raises privacy questions because Messages conversations can contain highly personal information. OpenAI told Bloomberg that the plug-in operates locally on the user's machine and does not create a complete index of their messages.
The feature marks another step towards turning ChatGPT from a conversational assistant into software capable of carrying out actions across users' everyday applications.
