Opposition stages walkout over ‘anti-people’ bills in parliament
The opposition walked out of parliament this evening, claiming that a series of “anti-people” bills were being passed despite their objections.
“Regrettably, despite the opposition’s logical objections, several anti-people bills have been passed today. We do not want to take responsibility for them. Therefore, we are walking out of the parliament,” Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-E-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said before leading the walkout at around 5:55pm.
By that time, the parliament had approved 24 bills, ratifying ordinances promulgated by the interim government.
The bills included the Supreme Court Judges Appointment (Repeal) Bill, 2026, the Supreme Court Secretariat (Repeal) Bill, 2026, and the National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Reinstatement) Bill, 2026.
Alongside these, the House also passed the National Sports Council (Amendment) Bill, the Bangabandhu Sports Welfare Foundation (Amendment) Bill, the Sheikh Hasina National Youth Development Institute (Amendment) Bill, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (Amendment) Bill, the Public Procurement (Amendment) Bill, the Overseas Employment and Migration (Amendment) Bill, the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Bill, the Local Government (Union Parishad) (Amendment) Bill, and the Legal Aid Services (Amendment) Bill.
Other bills passed included the Jatiya Muktijhoddha Council (Amendment) Bill, the Land Use Control and Agricultural Land Protection Bill, the Bangladesh Telecommunication (Amendment) Bill, the Bangladesh Gas (Amendment) Bill, the Human Organ Transplantation Bill, the Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulation (Amendment) Bill, the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants Bill, and the Forest and Tree Conservation Amendment Bill, among others.
The opposition had raised objections to several of the bills, including the Supreme Court Judges Appointment (Repeal) Bill, 2026, the Supreme Court Secretariat (Repeal) Bill, 2026, and the National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Reinstatement) Bill, 2026.
However, opposition MPs returned to parliament at around 6:55 pm.
