Who to blame for police?

Esam Sohail, Kansas, USA
The op-ed by Nurul Huda (DS May 18) provides a very useful historical context for the level of respect people have for the police in Bangladesh. Yet, history is not destiny. The British Raj departed in 1947 and the Pakistanis were gone by 1971; at what point does it become the responsibility of Bangladeshis to reform their own police? Some might argue that we had military regimes and hence couldn't do so. Well, we have had elected, political governments since 1990, so even that argument does not hold much water. The real reason for keeping a discredited police system is that it serves the interests of those who manage to gain state power, no matter what their ethnicity, manner of elevation to power, and political ideology is.
