Former Australia Test batsman Marcus North has announced his retirement from first-class cricket.
The 34-year-old Western Australia captain made the surprise announcement at a news conference in Perth on Thursday, having enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career.
He finished the 2013/14 season as the leading runs scorer in the Sheffield Shield, but it was a tragic campaign off the field as his brother died in a car accident in November.
Left-hander North played 21 Tests, two one-day internationals and one Twenty20 for Australia, scoring five Test centuries, including a 117 on his debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in February 2009.
