Bangladeshi expat shot dead in South Africa, family says
A Bangladeshi businessman was shot dead by unidentified assailants in South Africa yesterday afternoon, according to the victim's family.
The deceased, Sumon Miah, 34, hailed from Abhirampur Paschim Para area of Banshoil union in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail, Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Mirzapur Police Station, confirmed citing family members.
According to family and locals, Sumon went to South Africa 14 years ago to fulfil his family's dream. He had been doing business near Newcastle city in the country.
Around 1:00pm Saturday local time (5:00pm BST), unidentified assailants stopped his car and shot him dead. Police later recovered the body.
Sumon's father told reporters that his acquaintances in South Africa informed the family of the incident over the phone immediately.
Sumon's body may reach Bangladesh on Tuesday, the father said.
He is the youngest among seven siblings. He got married three years ago and has a two-year-old son, his family said.
Hundreds of Bangladeshis have been murdered in South Africa over the past decade because of business and personal disputes within the community.
On April 9, a Bangladeshi youth -- Sohan Hossain, 18, son of Md Dulal of Chikanmati village in Ranishankoil upazila of Thakurgaon -- was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Zonkizizwe Township of Katlehong, Johannesburg.
